What are the basic requirements for qualified mooring tails in shipping?

Mooring tails, also known as synthetic tails or rope tails, are short extensions fitted to the end of a vessel’s main mooring lines to introduce elasticity and absorb dynamic loads from wind, waves, and tidal movement. In shipping, a qualified mooring tail must satisfy strength, dimension, material, connection, inspection, and documentation rules set by international guidelines and port standards. This article outlines the basic requirements for qualified mooring tails based on current industry practices.


Strength and Break Force Requirements

The most fundamental requirement is the Tail Design Break Force (TDBF). Under the OCIMF Mooring Equipment Guidelines Fourth Edition (MEG4), synthetic tails should have a TDBF of 125% to 130% of the Ship Design Minimum Breaking Load (SDMBL) . This means the tail must be stronger than the main mooring line, whose Line Design Break Force (LDBF) is only 100–105% of SDMBL . Port standards such as Pilbara Ports (effective 1 January 2025) also state that mooring tails MBL shall be 125–130% of ship design MBL and the maximum diameter must not exceed 110 mm . Chinese inspection notes similarly require TDBF to be 25–30% higher than the winch design minimum breaking load (DMBL) . The tail should never be the weakest link in the system.


Length and Elasticity Specifications

A qualified tail must provide enough stretch without causing excessive vessel movement. MEG4 specifies that mooring tails are normally between 11 m and 22 m in length . The 11 m length is traditional, but exposed berths with wave heights up to 2 m and long periods may require 22 m to prevent immediate breakage or fatigue of winch ropes . Pilbara Ports recommends 11 m standard and 22 m for exposed mooring . The length directly affects energy absorption and must be selected per berth condition.


Material and Construction Quality

Tails are typically made of high-strength synthetic fiber such as nylon, polyester, or UHMWPE . Nylon offers 20–35% elongation but loses strength when wet; polyester gives about 12% stretch with better UV and abrasion resistance . Quality tails use double braid or 12-strand construction with professional splices that retain at least 90% of original break strength . For steel wire main lines, a high-modulus fiber tail is required, and polypropylene is discouraged for liquid cargo ships due to spark risk .


Connection and Hardware Compliance

Tails must be joined to the main line via approved methods. MEG4 requires Tonsberg (straight pin) shackles for tails and Mandal (curved roller) for wires, or Boss shackles as alternative . Pilbara Ports allows a cow hitch (rope-to-rope join without devices) for HMPE/HMSF lines . The shackle Safe Working Load (SWL) must equal or exceed the line Working Load Limit (WLL) . Proper eye splicing and protection against chafing are mandatory .


Inspection, Retirement, and Record-Keeping

A qualified tail is one that is actively managed. MEG4 and port rules require inspection before each use and retirement when residual strength falls to 75% of design MBL or after a fixed period . Steel-wire synthetic tails are generally replaced at 18 months unless condition-based assessment extends or shortens this . Pilbara Ports sets retirement at 24 months from certificate date or 75% residual strength . All tails need up-to-date certificates on board and a Line/Mooring Tail Management Plan (MLMP) with logs of use and checks .


Spare and Uniformity Rules

Vessels must carry at least four spare tails of similar material, MBL, and diameter to active ones . Tails in the same service area should be uniform to avoid unequal load sharing . This ensures rapid replacement and system consistency.

In summary, qualified mooring tails in shipping must meet defined TDBF of 125–130% SDMBL, length 11–22 m, certified synthetic material with proper splice, approved connection hardware, pre-use inspection, timed retirement, onboard certificates, and spare holdings.
