Mooring tails are short synthetic extensions fitted to the end of primary mooring lines to add elasticity and absorb dynamic loads during berthing. The durability of these components depends heavily on the fiber selected. This article outlines the common materials used to make durable mooring tails, based on marine industry guidance and material property analyses.


Nylon (Polyamide)

Nylon is a traditional material for durable mooring tails due to its high elasticity. It shows an elongation at break of 20% to 35%, which allows exceptional absorption of shock loads from waves and wind. Nylon tails are often built in 8-strand or 12-strand designs with double braid, offering approximately 30% stretch and good abrasion resistance. However, nylon loses strength when wet and is less resistant to UV and chemicals, so it requires regular inspection. It remains ideal for temporary or high-dynamic berthing where energy absorption is prioritized.


Polyester

Polyester is the most versatile and widely used material for durable tails. It provides moderate elongation of about 12% and retains higher strength when wet compared with nylon. Its superior UV resistance, abrasion resistance, and chemical stability make it suitable for long-term exposure at ports. Polyester tails show consistent performance under sustained load with low creep, fitting permanent or medium-energy mooring. They are cost-effective and frequently chosen for general vessel and platform systems.


Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)

UHMWPE, a high-performance fiber, delivers extreme tensile strength with minimal elongation (around 3–4%) and floats on water. It exhibits excellent UV, abrasion, and chemical resistance, and its break strength can exceed steel wire by large margins at same diameter. Because of low stretch, UHMWPE is used in hybrid tails or with compliant elements to avoid peak load transfer. It suits deep-water, high-load, or weight-sensitive applications despite higher cost.


Polypropylene and Mixed Fibers

Polypropylene is lightweight, floats, and is cheap, but has lower strength and poor UV durability, limiting it to mild or low-load use. A common durable variant is the polyester-polypropylene mix, which combines polyester’s strength with polypropylene’s buoyancy (specific gravity ~0.92) to prevent sinking and snagging. This blend is used in ports and floating storage with decent abrasion and chemical resistance.


Other Considerations for Durability

Hybrid designs pair polyester bodies with UHMWPE reinforcement in high-load zones to balance stretch and strength. Wire rope is rarely a standalone tail due to no elasticity but may pair with synthetic sections. Proper construction (double braid, 12-strand) and splice retaining >90% strength also define durability. Environmental aging from UV and seawater gradually reduces polymer life, so coated or sheathed tails extend service.
